Crude Picture

"Familiarization" is like painting a crude picture of something, then mistaking the painting for the actual thing. We're tempted to indulge in this reductionist behaviour because we've a need to make sense of our experiences. But there's real danger in the portraiture of naming things, of defining them and dismissing them as "known": It kills our open-hearted curiosity and breeds the cruelty of objectification.
